Drenkovo II

The finds

Stone tools invariably played a crucial role in the life of prehistoric people. The biography of these objects usually starts with the selection of suitable raw materials, which are then brought to the settlement where they would be modified according to the needs of the users and culture-specific templates. The future tools are carefully shaped by chipping and pecking, their surfaces are smoothed and ground down, then finished by polishing with leather and sand.

An impressive number of stone axes, adzes, smoothers, hammers, and grinding stones form the surface collected assemblage from Drenkovo II. Several concentrations of such artifacts clearly stood out in various places across the surface of the settlement. Could it be that the inhabitants of the prehistoric settlement in the Garleshki Nivi area specialized in making stone tools?

Several miniature altars have been discovered during the survey with the same triangular shape and impressed decoration of round dots. One of them stands out from the rest because its clay fabric is tempered with organic inclusions, resembling the clay mixture used in the construction of residential buildings. In this respect, it is reminiscent of special cult objects, mostly large anthropomorphic figures made of a similar matrix, permanently attached to the house interior. So, this altar likely belongs to the same group of objects and played a certain role in a particular building.
